US President Obama's bluntness has shocked some Israelis and their supporters, who long assumed that when push came to shove the United States would acquiesce to the facts Israel has created in the West Bank through its establishment of over 120 settlements since 1967. The President knocked the wind out of their sails by reiterating US support for the 1967 borders as the basis for any final peace deal. The Palestinian state, he declared, "should be... sovereign and contiguous [and] based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps, so that secure and recognised borders are established for both states."

Suicide bomber kills one of the powerful police chief in North Afghanistan

TALOQAN : A suicide bomber attacked a meeting of political and military leaders in Takhar province.and killed one of the most powerful men in north Afghanistan, along with a provincial police chief and three German troops,

NATO’s commander for the northern region and the governor of Takhar province were also in the provincial council gathering, but survived the attack, officials said.

Egypt opens Gaza border crossing, easing 4-year blockade


RAFAH CROSSING : With Hosni Mubarak regime gone Hundreds of Palestinians headed to this desert border crossing Saturday morning to be the first to enter Egypt under newly eased restrictions for residents of the Gaza Strip.

Egypt announced that it would open the Rafah crossing after the Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas signed a reconciliation accord in Cairo early this month. The border opening had been offered as an inducement to Hamas to sign the pact.
